Household sponges can hold billions of bacteria if not cleaned properly. It is recommended that you discard them frequently; however, sponges are still more sustainable than paper towels.  To keep germs at bay, use all-natural sea sponges, which have antibacterial properties, and disinfect them every few days.  To disinfect your sponges, soak them for five minutes in a solution of one quart water and three tablespoons chlorine bleach, then rinse and allow to air-dry. You can also disinfect your sponges by running them through your dishwasher.  Place the sponge on the top rack of your dishwasher and run them through with the dry cycle on.

Pro Tip:

  • If your sponges smell or are starting to crumble, replace them with a new one.
  • Don’t use the same sponge for all of your cleaning tasks.  To avoid cross contamination, use different sponges for dishwashing, counters, kitchen, and bathroom.

Your trash cans need to be cleaned and sanitized regularly to remove spills, gunk, and odors. The smell of rotten trash and spills inside of your trash can attracts rodents, roaches, and ants. Before cleaning, rinse or spray your trash can inside and out with a garden hose. To sanitize, mix one cup of Clorox bleach Clorox bleach with 1 gallon of water and a tablespoon of Dawn Antibacterial dish soap or any other brand that you prefer. Mix well and allow this to soak in your trash can for 30 minutes to an hour. Use a long handled brush to clean the sides and bottom of the trash can. Rinse thoroughly and turn upside down to dry.

Pro Tip:

  • Always pour out or drain liquids in a sink before tossing containers into a trash can.
  • Always use a trash can liner or trash bag inside of your trash can.

To remove mildew from the interior of your dishwasher, mix one cup of Clorox bleach to 1 gallon of water. You can also mix a 1/2 cup ammonia with one gallon of water. Never mix bleach and ammonia. Mixing bleach with ammonia creates highly toxic and potentially lethal fumes. Don’t use chlorine bleach to clean the interior of your dishwasher if it has a stainless steel interior; bleach can corrode stainless steel. Always wear gloves when cleaning with bleach or ammonia. After creating the mixture appropriate for your dishwasher’s interior, wipe it thoroughly with a cloth or sponge. Run the dishwasher through a rinse cycle to remove any residual cleaner.
